NSPE's Leadership Institute for Women Professional Engineers
held in conjunction with NSPECon24

NSPE invites mid-career women professional engineers to join the inaugural cohort of this unique professional development program. The three-day, in-person engagement supports mid-career women professional engineers in confidently navigating their career path and leveraging their leadership skills. This program was imagined by the Women’s Leadership Program Task Force of NSPE with the goal of empowering female leaders to reach their career goals while leading the way for a more diverse future in our profession.

The Leadership Institute agenda is interwoven into the NSPECon24 program with participants attending pre-conference opening sessions on Wednesday, August 7, and sessions the mornings of Thursday, August 8 and Friday, August 9. All attendees will be able to attend NSPECon24 Keynote lectures and meal functions. The program will be engaging, fun, inspiring, and educational. Who Should Attend?

The Leadership Institute for Women Professional Engineers is designed for someone who is in the mid-career stage. Ideally attendees will have experience in leading teams and/or projects but are considering seeking skills and confidence to move to the next level of leadership in the workplace which may be leading departments, divisions, or other opportunities. This institute is not designed for entry level professionals.

INSTITUTE THEME 1: PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

What does it mean to be AUTHENTIC?

Why is it difficult to be authentic? Being a woman in leadership who is seeking to grow and advance her career feels like it can be at odds with showing up authentically. This keynote acknowledges the different expectations of female leaders and male leaders and explores the benefits and challenges of leading authentically as a woman.

Leading Confidently and Authentically

Leading confidently requires you to lean into your gifts and talents. This session will help you define your strengths and clarify your authentic leadership style. Self-understanding is step one, but equally important is learning how to communicate your strengths and accomplishments effectively.

Charting Your Career Pathway

What comes next in your career? Determining the next phase, independent of what is expected of you, can be challenging. In this session, you’ll get curious about growth opportunities, explore career ambitions, and discuss having the courage to pivot toward something new.

Leveraging Meaningful Relationships to Advance Your Career

Advancing your career requires a network of people around you. Building those relationships requires you to be strategic while also being authentic. In this session, we’ll discuss expanding your internal and external networks and learn to get comfortable leveraging existing relationships to advance your career goals.

Building Trust and Positive Team Culture

Advancing through leadership often entails managing increasingly more complex groups of people. In this session we’ll discuss encouraging and facilitating inclusive engagement across race, gender, and age. We’ll also practice navigating difficult conversations and learn how to build trust through delegation.

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

Moving up in leadership requires you to take stock of internal and external factors that have contributed to your success to this point. Evaluating skills is important, but so is reflecting on habits that may no longer serve you in higher-level positions. This session will focus on identifying obstacles that hold you back and introduce strategies to remain authentic while adapting to the changing demands of new positions.

Negotiating & Advocating

Learning the nuances of preparing and communicating during negotiations can make a huge difference in your success rate. In this session we’ll help you identify barriers to self-promotion, discuss negotiating with various audiences, and learn how to draw stakeholders to your vision and influence others positioned to elevate your status.

Reflection and Goal Setting

This session will focus on reflecting on all conference sessions to clarify individual goals and action plans moving forward.

Meet the Facilitator: Rebecca Malotke-Meslin

Rebecca Malotke-Meslin is the founder of Pleasantly Aggressive Coaching & Consulting. Through one-on-one coaching, leadership cohorts, and speaking engagements, she helps early and mid-career women leaders gain valuable leadership skills, rediscover their authentic voice, and build the confidence they need to achieve their goals. In her role as a consultant, she works with organizations to eliminate barriers, reduce biases, and create more inclusive spaces for all women. Rebecca combines her background in social research with 20 years of sales, marketing, communications, and school leadership to create an in-depth and engaging experience for her clients. Rebecca also co-hosts the Confidently You: Women in Leadership Podcast.
